Matzah must be the first and last thing eaten at the Seder. This seems strange, given that the Seder’s narrative arc is “to begin with degradation and end with dignity.” How can the same simple matzah symbolize both extremes? Often, the very same thing can be experienced either as oppressive or as liberating. It all depends on how you choose view it. When viewed through a lens of victimhood, matzah is “the bread of poverty that slaves ate.” When seen from the vantage point of joy and exaltation, matzah is the bread we baked as we fled Egypt, liberation bread. How we see our experience often dictates its quality.
